Expectations
- Ask don't tell. We are all reasonable and we all understand the various demands on your time. Asking to do something out of the ordinary is always better than telling. There is a difference between a reason and an excuse. A reason is getting permission before and an excuse is given after. Excuses annoy the people. Sending an email after 3pm asking for permission is not appreciated.
- Practice starts at 3:15 (and 2pm on some Wednesdays). You can come late with permission and a reason. "I was at the trainer," is not a reason. "I had to go back to my dorm and ...," is not a reason. If lateness to practice become a pattern you will get a cut without warning.
- Everyone does the captains warm up. Throwers, jumpers, distance. There is a simple, basic requirement for everyone on the team and that is to be able to jog a lap and participate in a full body active warm up. If you can't warm up properly, then you don't practice and you will get a cut.
- Participate in practice the day before the meet in order to compete in the meet. If you can't practice the day before the meet you can't compete in the meet. Competing in a meet is a privilege, not a right. You must put in the work to get the reward. Without the reps there is no ready.
- You will earn your team singlet by either (1) earning a varsity letter the previous season, (2) scoring meet points, or (3) being in the top 3 in your event.
- Team picture includes athletes wearing team singlet, blue Athletic Dept. t-shirt, or Andover jacket. If not, you will not be in team picture. Dress for success.
Criteria to Earn a Letter
To earn a varsity letter on the track team, you need to earn points. This system is objective and stresses individual improvement throughout the season. Total points needed for a letter is 15. You can earn points in the following ways. . .
- One point is earned for every short term goal (season PR) achieved (improvement from lowest mark to highest mark) in a meet.
- Points from meets are awarded according to the meet scoring. Relay points scored are divided evenly among the 4 team members. Points earned in the Exeter JV meet count toward a letter.
- 10 points toward your letter if you are senior and on the team the the previous year and in good standing.
- 5 points toward your letter if you are an upper or lower and on the team the previous year and in good standing.
- You cannot letter from the training room. Practicing with the team and being a contributing team member is a qualification of earning a letter. This cannot be accomplished from the training room. "You can't make the club from the tub." - Bill Parcells
- No matter how many points you earn, you do not get a letter if you leave the team or if the coaches don’t feel you have lived up to the Code of Conduct and Expectations.
At the end of the season, the coaching staff reviews the points of each athlete and has the final say in who earns a varsity letter.
